Background. Two Popes served through the Nazi period: Pope Pius XI (–) and Pope Pius XII (–). The Holy See strongly criticized Nazism through the late s and throughout the s, with Cardinal Pacelli (later Pope Pius XII) being a particularly outspoken critic. In , Vatican signed a Concordat with Germany, hoping to protect the rights of Catholics under the Nazi. The relations between Pope Pius IX and Judaism were off to a good start at the beginning of his papacy, but relations later soured after anti-clerical revolutions removed most of the pontiff's temporal power and he stiffened into intolerance. While Pius rejected charges of antisemitism, the rift created by the Mortara Affair undermined his moral authority in the eyes of some during the rest of.

New York, Harper & Bros., (DLC) The book is principally about Pius XI until his death in and, to a considerably lesser degree, the cardinal who would later become Pius XII rather than the same man as Pope. It may be argued that the Vatican was not wholly neutral in these matters and that their records may be self-serving or otherwise gloss over issues it would prefer to.

The Pope Who Would Be King: The Exile of Pius IX and the Emergence of Modern Europe by david i. kertzer random house, pages, $ B ooks like this are rare.
The Pope Who Would Be King is one of the few publications that has made me commit a mortal sin—that of envy. I wish I could tell a story in such a colorful and lively way. Pope Pius XII also gave a number of speeches concerning the war and violence against noncombatants. His first public speech on March 3,was broadcast via radio, and he pleaded for peace.
This was a common element of Pius’ public speeches; he consistently made appeals for peace and, failing that, for innocent noncombatants to be spared. Pope Pius IX is not usually treated very objectively nor fairly in most history books. Kertzer has produced a very readable and (for me) surprisingly detailed account of the early years of Pio Nono's pontificate: his reforms, his popularity, revolution and the pope's flight into exile at Gaeta.

Documents (28): Type: Date: E supremi apostolatus cathedra On the restoration of all things in Christ. Pius VI can appeal to Louis XVI’s moving last will and testament, but in order to prove the point he has to show that the cause of his death was odium fidei.
In order to prove this, Pope Pius argues that the main thrust of the revolution was against the Catholic religion. In the course of his argument he makes a bold claim about the.
